Facebook Ads

This blog is designed to help if you’re setting up a Facebook Ad.

It was recommended by ASPA member Kimberley at a recent Prose and Cons meeting, and it links to a YouTube video that explains the intricate settings you need to make the most of Facebook Ads, especially if you’re selling books.

Facebook uses so many automated settings powered by AI, designed to make setting up an ad quick and easy and to provide a good user experience. However, that doesn’t always mean they are efficient if you’re an independent small business trader.

Meta also changes the options and settings for its ads frequently, so this video is still fairly current from January of this year.

With pay-per-click ads, your spend can mount up quickly, and however gratifying it may be to see that 45 people have clicked on your cover image in the past few hours, you still want to make sure that those 45 people are genuinely interested in buying your book, and not just clicking because it’s a pretty image.

This video by Dave Gaugharan talks you through the different settings that should be turned on and off and narrows your choices down to a specific audience to suit you. This means that your ad should only be put in front of (for example) readers of historical romance who own an Amazon Kindle and shop at the Kindle Store.

He explains how you can make your ad very niche and genre-specific so that every click you get is from someone with a genuine interest in engaging with your topic. And he gives strong advice on the style of image that works the best.

One thing I must say up front is that this video is quite long. Dave is a very friendly and engaging man and explains everything very clearly, but he does spend a lot of time in his demonstrations when you may be ready to move on. In my opinion, it’s worth sticking with it and watching the video all the way through the first time to get the full picture.

After that, you can replay it and make some notes for your own reference or have the video running in one window whilst you set up your ad in another.

I have tried the set-up myself and, as Kimberley said at our meeting, have been very impressed by the amount of interest it generated. The comments in the video also show many happy authors out there who have followed the advice and exceeded their usual sales.

Even if you only try it once, it’s worth a look to see if it works for you.

Here’s the link, and I wish you the best of luck! And thanks again to Kimberley for the recommendation.

On a final note, if anyone can recommend a video that explains the up-to-date tricks for Amazon Ads, then please drop a link in the comments so we can give that a go too.

Thanks!
